Music for a beginner?
on: May 02, 2014, 02:32:37 AM
Sorry if this belongs in sheet music request. I wasn't sure.
But I'm a beginner. I've been learning music theory and how to play piano from a teacher since August 2013.
And now we have to play a piece of our choice for our final exam on May 23rd.
But I don't know what to play.
I really like baroque/classical music. That was the reason I even wanted to learn piano.
But I can't find any pieces my own level.
Any recommendations?
I was hoping for something like Scarlatti. His sonatas are really beautiful.
Or any similar sounding composers.

Now is not the time to learn a new exam piece just pick one of the pieces you have done recently and brush it up.

That would be kind of stale since we have to play the pieces we learn in front of the class anyways.
When we're just playing songs from the book we use, we have to play every friday to the class using the keyboards.
But when we do our final exam we have to play it on a grand piano in front of the class like a recital.
That's the only difference between our weekly quizzes and our final.
So if I did a piece I've already learned then I would just be repeating a play quiz from the past that everyone has already heard.

Scarlatti:
K34

K32

One page and among the easiest (not really beginner pieces though)

Purcell:
Prelude from Suite in G Major, Z660

Very short but nice

Rameau:
Menuet en Rondeau

You've probably heard it before, maybe already played...

I can link the scores if needed, all available free in the net.

But Jmenz has a point, you could also try to polish one of your earlier pieces. Even if you already can play the notes, you can always make it more beautiful with some practice.

If you choose a new piece, you should at least go through it with your teacher.

The closest I can get for you is Mozart. Mozart Minuets, thinking in particular of K2 in F. It's level 2 but by now hopefully you have accomplished the F key signature. Andante in D is even nicer though and good prep work for K545 later on in your studies. But you don't have much time, you might be best off with some modern easy piano piece. You only have three weeks till the event. Starting something new now is cutting it short at best, you can't waste any time..
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

This is lovely, no matter what level you are. But lovelier still the farther along you get  :)

That is a very nice suggestion, visitor! I just went and found it in my Paul Sheftel compilation of "solos for the intermediate pianist". I may learn it for my upcoming recital slash exam (June 13), if the current plan doesn't pan out.
