What is this sound?
on: May 03, 2014, 03:40:13 AM
Hello everyone,

So more common that I wanted it to be, I hear high pitched noises when some keys on the lower octaves (1-2) are played. Say, this video of the Heroic Polonaise:

Can you notice that in the first Eb chord, there is a high pitched noise? I don't know if I'm the only one who hears it (probably not). I also hear it when I'm messing around with my friend's Synthogy Ivory VSTi Piano Software. Here's an example: https://synthogy.com/demos/play/d2011-08-31a.html

I recommend headphones to hear it more clearly.

What is this sound?

I'm not sure exactly which wringing noise you are hearing but it's probably sympathetic harmonics from paying open or undampened strings with the pedal down. Very common. My Kawai digital tends to over due this with the dynamics feature on full, I had to tame it slightly. My grand has a special little wring all it's own if middle C gets slightly out of tune but that's different and your sound can be duplicated on several instruments apparently.

I love the dog in the video !
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Haha, that's a nice observation.

The sound is a  crystal like, high pitched sound in the first chord of the polonaise. I think you can hear it better if you use a good pair of headphones. I can't be the only one who hears it!~

It's weird since the Bösendorfer is the only brand that I'm able to hear this sound. It only happens when you play the first octave Eb.
