Joplin Collected Piano Works: Editions?
on: May 05, 2014, 12:53:48 AM
A student wants to get the collected piano works of Scott Joplin and has asked for advice. I'm trying to decide what edition to suggest.

I have the old volume edited by Vera Brodsky Lawrence and published by the NY Public Library in 1972, and I note that Alfred has recently reprinted it.  That volume, with over 300 pages, contains 41 original works, 1 work attributed to Joplin, some collaborative works, Joplin's School of Ragtime, and an arrangement of a J. Lamb tune that was made by Joplin. The scores are all reprints of old sheet music.

I see that there is also a Shirmer Edition for considerably less money. It claims to have "42 of Joplin's most famous rags", and it says the plates are "all newly engraved". It is 208 pages.

Is anyone acquainted with the Schirmer edition?  How is it? (eg: How's the page layout, paper quality, binding, editing, etc. etc.)

I have the Dover complete Rags and the collected non-Rags. They seem perfectly adequate to my needs. I can't vouch for absolute completeness, though.

Thanks.  Actually, I was aware of the Dover edition of the Rags, but I read somewhere that it lacks quite a few Joplin pieces, such as Bethena, Solace, The Great Crush Collision, Combination March, Harmony Club Waltz, Augustan Club Waltz, Cleopha, March Majestic, The Chrysanthemum, Rosebud, Binks' Waltz, Antoinette, and Pleasant Moments, as well as Lily Queen (composed with Arthur Marshall) and Sensation (written by Joseph Lamb, arranged by Joplin).

A few of those waltzes, such as Bethena and Pleasant Moments, are delightful. Solace is a good piece, too.

What is the other book you mentioned -- the Dover "collected non-Rags"?  I cannot find anything with that title?  I'm looking at the Dover website right now.  Could you post a link or the ISBN?  Thanks.

I have the Schirmer edition.  It is unedited with no fingerings.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

Konemann urtext (Budapest), which puts out a very nice quality score (I have some of the Scriabin volumes, really like these), has several volums of Joplin out (they are not a single compilation, you'll see rags volume, a waltzes volume, etc. for each).

I just saw a couple at a used bookshop last week, I meant to buy them, I should recheck if they're still there...

I have the New York Public Library edition, which was a great resource when it came out.  However, it won't lay flat without two hymnals and a binder clip on the thin side.  To seriously use it you have to take it to the copy shop for the pages you need.
The Belwin edition of generic rags with a couple of Joplin ones (Magnetic, Paragon) does lay flat and is what I learned the pieces from.
