Chopin Complete Works Vol VII ed. by Paderewski
on: November 26, 2004, 04:31:48 PM
I just purchased an edition of Chopin's Nocturnes entitled: "Chopin Complete Works VII Nocturnes. Edited by Ignacy Paderewski". Originally published in 1949 by the Instytut Fryderyka Chopin in Warsaw, Poland, this is evidently a very serious attempt at reproducing Chopin as faithfully as possible, using original manuscripts and notes whenever possible.
Each nocturne is discussed separately at the end of the book, with measure-by-measure evaluations of how the various sources were analyzed and interpreted.
One example, from a discussion of Nocturne in B major, op. 62 no. 1:
Bar 6
: In [the original German edition, (Breitkopf & Hartel, Leipzig, No. 7547)], there are not four equal quavers in the top voice at the beginning of the bar, but only two quavers, a dotted qaver and a semiquaver. The same applies to the second half of bar 31.
There are over 15 pages of this stuff. Its interesting to compare this edition to those available for free or a price from various internet sources.
Just wondering if anyone else out there has had experience with other editions of Chopin's works edited by Paderewski and his group?

The Paderewsky edition is excellent. If you can, get them all.
Also, have a look here (reply # 2):

Best wishes,

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. (Hunter Thompson)

Padewrewski editions are very good. I also have some Mikuli editions but they don't discuss anything in great depth. I am currently playing one of the etudes, and Paderewski offers different fingerings which are useful, he also discusses mistakes in the other editions in the back of the book. I think these editions are wonderful.
