Keys sticking after bushings replaced
on: May 10, 2014, 05:48:18 PM
I have a Steinway Model B and recently had some significant work done, including replacing the bushings. Since then, several keys have begun sticking. The technician was not concerned and showed me how to gently move the keys to unstick them, but now more keys are sticking. Is this just a temporary and common problem? Or did the technician cause an issue that will be on-going? Any advice?

If you think about this, piano keys should not be sticking. My thought is the tech needs to make it right. I'd be calling the guy up and telling him that this is unacceptable personally. It may or may not wear in, I don't know the answer to that.

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

There is a key bushing tool that compresses the felt and wood of the key. It's probably that the felt was not compressed so it's causing the key to stick. I agree with hfmadopter that the technician is at fault here so he needs to fix this problem at no charge.
