Griffes anyone?
on: May 14, 2014, 07:15:00 PM
Stumbled across this composer after a few years of accidentally ignoring him. If you guys aren't familiar, he's an American early 20th century composer, with some really cool stuff.
Fountains of the Acqua Paola
Clouds
Anyone played anything by him? If so, how was it? I did a presentation on his stuff four years ago, and kind of left it back in obscurity
but I'm considering playing a piece or two.

Dover recently published a new collection of his works, which I've dipped into but not really played. He looks interesting and I mean to go back to him. His White Peacock is probably his best known work - best known being a relative term here, though it was better known earlier last century. A clear Scriabin influence apparent in his works, though they are by no means derivitave.
For those concerned by such things, his surname is pronounced Griffis, accent on the first syllable, not Greef.
An interesting character who died tragically young.

I'm currently learning one of his tone pictures, number 1 to be exact (The Lake at Evening), but I'll probably learn the other two. I like them, they're very Clair-de-Lune-like and not many people know about them.
