Which Beethoven Sonata?
on: May 20, 2014, 10:30:13 AM
Which of these Beethoven piano sonatas should I learn? I am looking for something about 20-25 minutes in length. I am reluctant to play the Moonlight/Pathetique sonatas but will if I have to. I don't really know much about these Sonatas but have looked/listened to a few.

F minor, Op.2 no.1
C minor, Op.10 no.1
F major, Op.10 no.2
C minor (Pathetique), Op.13
E major, Op.14 no.1
G major, Op.14 no.2
Ab major, Op.26
C# minor (Moonlight), Op.27 no.2
F major, Op.54
E minor, Op.90

That seems to be lifted straight from the DipABRSM syllabus.

Why don't you let us know the rest of your programme, since you need to provide contrasting styles in the pieces.

The Op.54 and Op.90 are lovely pieces, but they are a pain in terms of interpretation.

What are you looking for in the sonatas? That will help us giving opinions on which sonata to play.
Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro

Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata

Currently, the rest of my programme is this:

Chopin - Mazurka Op.50 No.3 in C# minor
Liszt - Liebestraum No.2
Prokofiev - ‘Visions Fugitives’ No.8, 14, 19, 20

I would like a Beethoven Sonata to begin the recital. What do you think of my programme?

Do op.54 it's the least played sonata. It's also quite difficult to pull off

The "overplayed" criterion is definitely overrated. I can't hear it anymore >:( I don't understand that some people don't want to learn certain pieces just because they are frequently played by others out there. The fact that a piece is often performed doesn't mean it's bad. I believe that you are missing out a lot if you dismiss all the "popular" pieces. If somebody tries to be unique by playing an "underplayed" piece he/she is not! I suggest that you play what you like, not what the others don't like. You should listen to your heart when you decide about your own musical development.

Is there an official tally kept somewhere? How do they keep track?  :o

According to andras schiff it is.

It's one of my personal favorites for obvious reasons. Also the music is so wonderful. Beauty and the beast...

I am currently considering the F minor Sonata. So far it hasn't been too demanding. The arpeggios in the last movement look like they will need some work though.
