March 12 - Own Composition - Feedback
on: May 27, 2014, 07:49:38 PM
Hello,

Once again, I propose a composition for contemplation.

https://soundcloud.com/danthecomposer/march-12

Please realise this was not recorded on an acoustic piano so the pedal control is lacking which is quite frustrating; it's just USB with samples on the computer (Bosendorfer).

General opinions not about sound quality most welcome.

This is a special piece for me which I wrote for someone.

Thank you again.

Daniel.

I know you mentioned the performance of the arpeggios is not notated as such (in the other piece) but it feels like it has the same issues here where it doesn't convey the meaning of the intended idea, especially in the beginning.

At the 3:00" mark, the arpeggios take on a life and adds a lot of texture and color.  It feels as if there could be even more impact with the arpeggios, so as to cocoon the central idea at this moment in the piece, sort of like the climax.

Also, if the performance were slightly faster, the ideas flow better.  And dynamically, there could have been greater extremes of loudness.  This may have been an issue of the keyboard.

Indeed it was a keyboard limitation.  I try to highlight dynamics as much as possible but it's difficult.

I appreciate your comments once again.  In general, however, did you enjoy the melodic ideas and chords used?

Yes. What caught my attention was the opening motive, which was unexpected.  It had a reverse turn back down so it was almost like a sigh.

Do you have this piece notated in full?

Thank you.  A sigh.  Exactly why I wrote it.

No.  I do not score my music.  I am very soon to write chord charts because my album is almost complete.  My purpose in composition, for other musicians, is that they are to study the complicated chords, which is intended to develop their chord theory which is sadly lacking in the classical piano world, and also develop their ear and open-interpretation skills, so the melody must me internalised.  Thus, the piece will be performed absolutely at the whim and will of the performer who may well play it (hopefully) completely differently to me.

In very due course, I shall make you aware of the professionally-created chord charts, within 2 weeks.  If you're interested in basic form, however, I could write the chords in order for you to work out.

Many thanks indeed.  I hope you choose to share my compositional efforts with you social networks.

Best,
Dan

By chord charts, do you mean Ebm7 and the like?  I've never been taught how to read this.

Yes.  Well, in that case, I would recommend my very cheap jazz piano ebook available here :)

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
