Help with figured bass on 7th chords
on: May 30, 2014, 02:53:12 AM
I am using the Fundamentals of Piano Theory book written by Keith Snell and Martha Ashleigh. I am on Level 10, Unit 6: "Seventh Chords." I completed figured bass on Major and minor chords' first and second inversions with not too much trouble. I have just begun figured bass for seventh chords first, second, and third inversions. I have no idea how to do this. The book has an example listed for a CM7 chord. The root is written CM7, the first inversion CM 6/5, the second inversion CM 4/3, and the third CM 2. I understand this works perfectly fine for a Major seventh chord but what about a Dominant seventh chord? How can I possibly signify them by writing figured bass. I could maybe write C7 4/3 but now it doesn't seem correct to have the 7 next to C and the figured bass. Now this also applies to half diminished sevenths and diminished sevenths figured bass. HELP PLEASE!

The numbers will use the scale degrees of whatever key signature your piece is in. So if your piece is in C major and you have a G in the bass with a 7 under it you will get a G7 chord, ie the Dominant 7th chord, because ascending a 7th from G in the C major scale brings you to F, which is the 7th in G7. If you need a chord that uses pitches not present in the key signature you can add accidentals to the numbers:

Could you post a picture of your book example? This is what I meant, but with a Cmaj7 and a C7 instead:
