Liszt Repertoire
on: June 04, 2014, 04:40:16 AM
Hi!

Could anybody please recommend me some pieces? I would like so Romantic music (preferably Liszt) that is "calm", "softer", or "subdued". However, the piece should be so some difficulty (refer to my signature for my current repertoire).

Thanks.
Pathetique - Beethoven
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 - Liszt
Toccata - Bowen
Warrior/Memories in an Ancient Garden - Louie

Or some of the other Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses.

Or quite a few other pieces from the Annees.

There's also late Liszt. If you're feeling brave.

Thanks for the suggestions you gave me so far. Could you give me some more as I need to discuss them with my teacher also. And what would be the "late Liszt" pieces you are referring to?

You can read up on late Liszt here.

Some of the Hungarian Rhapsodies meet your requirements - for example:

Or a transcription, perhaps?

Liszt is rarely just subdued; his pieces have too many moods for that. His transcription of Lohengrin's Admonition might correspond to subdued, but it's probably also easier than you're wanting. Vallee d'Obermann might be of interest, though it's anything but subdued later on. The Abendstern transcription from Tannhauser perhaps?

Not that Prats' Liebestod! He misses out almost two pages and does heaven knows what else to it ::)

This is a really lovely performance, slight eccentricity at the end notwithstanding:

(there are four versions of this piece, this is the last, most subdued one. If you want, look into the others).

this is not usually the piece that comes to mind if one asks for 'difficult' but just try and get that right sound and color/character, and the difficulty readily makes itself apparent.

great work, this one gets it done nicely.

Stanchen is one of my personal favourite Liszt transcriptions.  I think any of the sonnetti from the 2nd book of annes would be good as well.  They're not terribly difficult and are quite melodic.

There's always Un Sospiro, as well.

Yikes - sorry! First one I found on a search and the first two bars sounded fine.  :-[
