Chromatic Runs
on: June 04, 2014, 08:48:17 AM
I've a mind to collect instances of chromatic runs.  Could you add yours?  In a printable format?  Thanks.  Here's my contribution from bar 33 of Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu op 66

I don't understand the point in making such a collection.....
Anyway Chopin Etude Op. 10 No. 2 is a great example, as is the end of Chopin Ballade No. 1.

It would be most helpful if I (and others!?) could just print them out.

I don't see the point... I'll still play along! You may want to check:

Most of Liszt's répertoire notably :
-Réminiscences de Don Juan (Mozart) bars 47-55. Double thirds from hell in chromatic runs!
-TE 12(Chasse-neige) LH, last half of the piece. Includes a bit of RH action and double thirds.
-HR2 bars 344-357 Chords!
-Spanish Rhapsody There's a whole page of chromatic runs for both hands towards the end

Alkan's Festin d'Ésope Variation 24 (among others)

Chopin's op. 25 #6-7-8

Beethoven's piano concertos are quite rich in chromatic runs.

Alkan Op 15 No 2 - La Vent. That should be enough chromatic runs for a lifetime.

Maybe two... I like that piece just not enough to ever learn it.
Just here to lurk and cringe at my old posts now.

Who's performance are you thinking of?  Hamelin's is rather bland and doesn't make the B section come alive. But I agree, if I ever needed work on chromatic runs, I'd learn that piece.

Not a famous pianist. But a good performance!

Indeed. Somewhat surprisingly, he was knocked out at the first round of the 2013 Paderewski. My opinion of competitions is not challenged.

I suspect we will hear more of him in years to come. Veniamin Zhukov, for those interested.

Hamelin's is much more musical.

How much is "much"? Judging from one of the comments there, Mr. Hamelin himself seems to have an entirely different opinion. :)
