Antique piano- should I buy?
on: November 27, 2004, 02:53:04 PM
A person I know is moving to New Zealand and offered to sell me an antique upright piano of his great gran for a very low price (R 400 south african currency) since he doesn't need it anymore. It's a 'Burlings & Mansfield' and he says it's over 100 years old. It's totally out of tune (there's dust everywhere inside it), the right pedal is missing and he says it hasn't been played properly for over 35 years. My worry is that it will be too expensive and difficult to restore, if it even still can be restored, but I'm drawn to that piano, there's something wow about it..
Do you think I should go ahead and get it?

Could someone please give me an opinion or some advice, I need to decide by tomorrow if I want to buy it or not.
Cheers in advance to anyone who does reply.

Get away from it! It´s probably an overdamper piano ("birdcage"). They are a big problem to stay those dampers properly regulated. All notes keep ringing all the way.

If it looks like this, then don´t buy it by all means:
Notice the dampers ABOVE the hammers:
You should consider buying it only if it´s not overdamper, so the dampers are below the hammers.
You have to look for this type of machine:
dampers under the hammers. Notice the whole action is not more caged by those mechanisms.

Thanks Piazzo22 for replying,
Yup, it's the overdamper pedal that's gone, and when I try playing it, the music echos. Kind of like on an eerie horror movie
, but I think it really is too old to be save
So I don't think I'm buying it, but thanks for you help!
Cheers.
