Bach Piece for ABRSM Diploma
on: June 08, 2014, 01:26:55 PM
Hey guys,

Recently I have been trying to select some pieces for my Dip Exam. I still can't decide on a good Bach piece to play. Any recommendations? Here is the list of the Bach pieces in the repertoire list:

Prelude and Fugue:
Part 1: no.12 in F minor, BWV 857
          no.14 in F# minor, BWV 859
          no.16 in G minor, BWV 861
Part 2: no.5 in D, BWV 874
          no.9 in E, BWV 878
          no.11 in F, BWV 880
          no.16 in G minor, BWV 885
          no.17 in Ab, BWV 886
Toccata no.3 in D, BWV 912: complete
Toccata no.5 in E minor, BWV 914: complete

Thanks in advance!  :)

If I remembered correctly, the time for the whole program 30-35 minutes. I heard that the program should be balanced and should include all programs from the 4 periods. When you talk about the baroque period Bach obviously comes to mind. I already have a Beethoven Sonata, possibly a Chopin polonaise, Grieg piece and a Rachmaninoff Prelude - I need about 5 more minutes to reach the time limit.

Thanks.

Do a 20th Century or (dare I say it) jazz. It's good to have all kinds of music for an exam.

To be honest, Jazz is not my style...

Thanks for the advice though

Hmm...
5 mins is quite short. If you're set on Bach you could look at his Well Tempered Clavier.
Scarlatti is another Baroque that comes to mind, he wrote 555 sonatas, most of which would fit into the programme.

The time is quite flexible, 5 minutes is the minimum. I am certainly considering Scarlatti, but say, I have decided to do Bach. From the list of pieces I posted, any that is a personal favorite? any that in your opinion, is interesting?

Hi, I'm sitting for ATCL in November which is equivalent to DipABRSM. My programme is applicable for DipABRSM too.

1. J.S.Bach - Toccata in E minor
2. Copland - Scherzo Homorisque "The Cat and The Mouse"
3. Brahms - Capriccio in F# minor
4. Beethoven - Piano Sonata in C minor "Pathetique"

I chose Toccata in E minor because it is one of Bach's earliest works. It is something that is very Bach. And also because too many people are choosing the Preludes and Fugues. I want to deliver to the examiner something fresh and different.
