Spinet Piano?
on: June 10, 2014, 12:25:10 PM
Ok so I just purchased a used Cable piano. According to the S/N 363019, it was built in 1962. The height of the piano is 38/39 in. So I am assuming this is a spinet. Can anyone clarify this? Is this a good starter piano? Are these easy to tune bc I am going to attempt it myself?

You want to be certain that it his piano does not have a drop action in it. Especially so where you are new to tuning pianos and want to tune it. Many shorter pianos have drop action.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

What do I look for to know if it has a drop action?
If when you open the piano cover and the hammers appear to be about level with the ends of the keys it has drop action. The case may also appear thicker than a standard upright. The piano would actually protrude out into the room more or Han a console with standard action for instance.

Personally, I would look for a piano of over 40" tall and avoid several types of potential problems, if to look for an upright. But then many people like spinets too.

Well I already purchased this piano, at a good price. I believe it has drop action. So does that mean it is harder to tune myself, or more expensive to have done? This is a starter piano, just to get started and then I will upgrade.

It will be more difficult to tune but then I don't care for tuning any upright compared with a grand.
