Sound only comes through 1 ear on kawai es7
on: June 11, 2014, 11:30:55 AM
Hi guys, so I hadn't really noticed the issue as I had always played via the external speakers. But until recently I tried putting in my headphones, only to find out that sound comes only through one side (left). Is this normal and is it possible to fix? Or rather is something faulty going on?

My first thought is have you checked the headphones themselves ? You could plug in a different set and if they do the same thing then probably there is a problem with the keyboard. Or you could plug your headphones into another component and see if you get the same result. Also make sure they are stereo phones or if you are using an adapter in the keyboard that it is stereo.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

Make sure you are using the headphone jack and not the line out jack.  They might both fit your headphone plug, but only the headphone jack is designed for listening with headphones.

Check your headphones with a computer or iPod.  Do they work properly in such case?

Make sure the plug is fully inserted into the jack.  You can get the one ear sound if the plug is only partially inserted.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Another possible cause you can check is the headphone jack and whether you are using an adapter?

I believe most headphones jacks are now 3.5mm, but the Kawai ES7 has 1/4in inputs. I am guessing you are using a 3.5mm to 1/4in adapter?

I had this problem with my Bose QC15 headphones to a Kawai C65 which also has 2 1/4in input connectors. I used an ill-fitting adaptor which caused the same symptom you described. After switching to the proper headphone that the adaptor was made for, everything was sweet. (And there was nothing wrong with my Bose).

Might be unlikely, but also check that the adapter is NOT a stereo to mono plug, if you are using an adapter.

The headphones definitely work fine when I use 3.5 input. I tried using my normal earphones and they still had the same issue. So the problem is definitely with the adapter or es7. How would i know if the adaptor is ill fitting?

I can only suggest you change the adapter or the headphone. If neither works, you have a problem with the ES7. I presume the problem exists on both the headphone ports?

Adapters are cheap anyway, so I suggest you get another one. Most likely that is the weakest link.
