This may seem odd to ask this here, but I need you Home Piano Teachers... I have a roommate. I own the home. She wants to start doing massage therapy out of one of the extra rooms, and I just found out that homeowners insurance doesn't cover that kind of thing where clients come in and out of the home. I was trying to think of another  home-business that is based on clients being in your personal home, and came up with piano teachers. How do you handle this with your homeowners insurance? Do you have special coverage? What agency do you recommend? I use AAA in California and he says they DONT cover it.

THanks for your help...

The reason insurance is an issue with a massage therapist is there is undressing and a treatment of the body, they also need to be licensed.  A lot of the fuss around massage was initiated back in the days of massage parlors... which were "ahem" not medicinal sorta kinda.  I never heard of insurance for piano lessons.  i would think that a general household policy would cover someone slipping on the ice walking in your door and such.   I do not have special coverage.

Massage licensing depends on the state. California she's ok, no special license needed.

If there is a way you can check with your agency (perhaps call from your non-home phone and act like you're checking as a potential customer) you may be surprised to find that your homeowner's insurance does NOT cover home business where clients are to come in and out. That is what my guy told me, because I have a computer graphics business which doesn't involve seeing anyone in my home, so I am ok, but a business whose nature is to have clients in and out is NOT covered. You may find that you are at risk. I am sure you can get a special addendum to cover it....it's because your business creates more liability than just a normal homeowner having a guest now and then, you have many people every day over at your house so the risk for someone injuring themselves is greater. True my roommate, with the physical contact going on , that is even probably MORE risk. I hate to tell her she can't do it because she's been excited, setting up the room.....but it's my home!

It only costs about $300 for the year.  So she could pay it to cover her business.  Spread out over a year it isn't bad.
