Sam Raphling 24 Etudes for Piano
on: June 23, 2014, 03:34:39 PM
Anyone studied any of these in depth? I just bought book 1 and am looking to find book 2 somewhere (any leads on a old volume 2 would be most appreciated ! ).

About all I know is that
"Raphling composed these advanced concert works in the 20th century idiom to take their place alongside the great etudes of the 19th century.  Most are brief, but interesting.  They demand advanced pianism and great agility :o.  They explore various timbres, colors, and rhythms"

Thanks in advance for any additional info (or perhaps some old program notes, etc or album recording insert w/ background on them, descriptions, etc.).

If you can cope with vinyl (and are quick) there's a recording of he himself playing them up for grabs cheapish on Amazon.

You also may find this interview interesting, though it doesn't relate specifically to the etudes, but it does have some tantalising looks at other pieces.

I assume you know of his solo transcription of Stravinsky's Firebird and Rite of Spring, but he seems to have been quite prolific, though now much out of print.

I have his Paganini Variations as part of my small collection of those, and a couple of other works. No leads on volume 2 of the etudes, though.

I had that lp in my cart but was waiting to see how much vol ii of the etudes would set me back, luckily I got them from a used book shop I had seen them at last year ( I thought he had sold them but was mistaken ), I have since got the recording too a now I have the full set w the composer audio too.  Happy times !!! 8)
