Which piece to play?
on: July 02, 2014, 03:12:58 PM

Hi piano lovers,

Coming year I will give a concert where I can play around 50 minutes.
I will play Carnaval of Robert Schumann but can anyone recommend some pieces which is nice besides that piece? Beethoven?
When I finished Carnaval I'm dead actually, so maybe something which is not too difficult.

Thanks!

some Bizet? Absolutely beautiful. Could really write phenomenally well for piano. Most people seem to have forgotten this. Such a shame really. Deserves more frequent programming  8)

The Preamble is explicitly based on a work by Schubert, which formed the spark for the whole work. It was a se5t of variations on his 2nd  Waltz from the D365 set.  I believe the variations have been lost (though recently "reconstructed").  The original Waltz might make a nice opening:

Carnival, which the Schumann depicts, is the day before the start of lent, so for an informed contrast perhaps follow it up with something with a Lenten theme (or at least something along those lines)?

Oh.... and what are you doing with the Sphinxes?

Hard to choose just one I want To someday play all. It is incredible that he compose all in about 2 1/2 months. Or about a piece a day on average.   Prophetic output actually considering it was such a dark time in his life.  He takes themes that should not work well as fugue themes and still manage to weave magic.  This fugue actually takes a nod at serialism but sill works incredibly well.

Maybe look at the set and pick two or three for an extended set?  The pieces become more involved the further Into the set you go , as if he got more and more excited as he turned them out. So several from first half it just on or two from 2nd volume would be really good

The Waltz is nice, but the score isn't it.
