Two piano works from the Baroque or Classical.
on: July 11, 2014, 09:36:30 PM
I am working on putting together a two piano recital (for graduate work) and I was wondering what you guys would suggest from the Baroque and Classical time periods. There is a plethora of works beginning with the early romantics but before that I haven't discovered too much of note. Thanks!

The Mozart D major Sonata for 2 pianos is amazing!

Very challenging though!

Have you played music for two pianos before?

Yes, nothing extensive (I focused mainly on solo/concerto rep for my undergrad). I've done some Bach transcriptions and a Brahms Hungarian dance (although the Brahms was for one piano four hands). I've also done the Schumann concerto and the Saint-Seans 4th on two pianos but those don't really count.

Check out W F Bach.

Thanks! I've discovered the Sonata in F for two harpsichords. Also now on my list.

Will any transcription of works for two pianos be your consideration?

Four hands one piano is EXTREMELY different from two pianos. They are not at all the same thing. Playing concertos with 2nd piano accompaniment is also COMPLETELY different from playing real two-piano music, so you are correct when you say they don't really count.

I haven't done any two piano works by W F Bach, but one of my pupils recently started one (I think it was that Sonata in F actually) so I will get to know it very soon.

Your absolutely right. So I should have said no, I haven't really done any two piano music.  ;)

I recently played Beethoven's 9th Symphony arranged for 2 pianos by Liszt.... that is a really fun and ambitious project, although the work is often considered to mark the end of the classical era/the beginning of the romantic era.
