Repertoire suggestions for my brother please?
on: July 19, 2014, 06:23:48 PM
Hi guys,

I need a bit of help please, my younger brother (14 years old on Monday) is looking for new pieces to play but mostly everything I recommend he says is "boring" and "sounds the same."

He just did his grade 5 abrsm exam, in which he probably got a merit/distinction in. Furthermore, he doesn't really know which composers he likes as he doesn't listen to much piano music.

So far I've suggested:
-Various Chopin Waltzes
-Bach Inventions
-Beethoven's Op49 sonatas
-Scarlatti sonatas

Thanks for any suggestions!

Bach, Scarlatti, and other earlier composers are difficult to like as a young musician. I would definitely recommend something Chopin, such as his mazurkas or polonaises. Perhaps Ravel Sonatine, or Tombeau de Couperin? If you can tell me what his current repertoire is, I can suggest more pieces that are at his level.

perhaps etincelles (sparks) by Moskowski? it might be too difficult.  I played it when i was about 13 and it didn't give me too many issues... outside of this one section  >:(  That piece certainly doesn't sound boring.

It all depends of what kind of music he likes! What kind of music does he listen to?
"14 years old on Monday" ....dont laught! Are you shure he really likes classical music? Thats unusual.. (only me at that age as I remembered)
Otherwise I suggest some Linkin park...(no, dont laught!) Ludovico einaudi, etc

"boring" and "sounds the same."

Try a series called "Contemporary Collage" - it's a graded series of 21st century pieces and should liven him up.

You can get them, inter alia, here.
