[VIDEO] Scriabin op 8 No 12
on: July 23, 2014, 03:21:13 AM
V6P2w

It's actually on Horowitz's Steinway, the same one which he used on tour in Russia and in many recordings near the end of his life.
It's clearly not quite performance-ready, and there are lots of mistakes. I hadn't practiced the piece for a week or two, so it's obviously not quite where it should be. I'm not very satisfied with it, especially musically, but I only had time for one recording. Sorry for the potato quality, all I had available was my phone.
Be as critical as you like.

I find your playing here lacks the fiery intensity of impassioned speech.

I know that the piece is almost impossible to play without mistakes....nobody expects to hear it without mistakes.... but it would be nice if you could somehow keep the mistakes away from the structurally important material (melody notes, bass notes, etc). Practice without pedal, and consider using the pedal more judiciously in performance.

There is a relentless, desperate, almost obsessive quality to the sound that I hear in great performances of this piece which I miss here. I'm sure you've heard the piano-roll of Scriabin? Even he makes mistakes, but we just don't seem to care, because of how terrifying he makes the piano sound.

Yeah, I completely agree. It feels pretty bland and, especially the first page, didn't really feel exciting at all.
I'll work on the pedaling and I'll try to shape it more to give it that fiery intensity, as you said. I'll play the piece on Saturday in a concert, and I'll post another video then.
