Interview with Juilliard dean, Ara Guzelimian
on: August 05, 2014, 02:05:47 PM
Hi, Everyone,

Hope you're all having a wonderful week. Our latest interview is with Juilliard dean, Ara Guzelimian, who's currently in the Bay Area to give a talk on the life and times of pianist Alice Herz-Sommer. I had the chance to speak with the former senior director of Carnegie Hall, and asked his thoughts on this generation's approach to music-making, Herz-Sommer, his time working with Isaac Stern, and the voices (composers) of today.

As always, thank you all for reading :)

As always... thank you for posting.

I find it a bit rich that he says

" the cost of education is probably the single biggest issue that keeps us sleepless at night."

I happen to know that the dean of music at MY local conservatoire has a salary of about a quarter of a million dollars per year..... and my local conservatoire is not NEARLY as well-known OR well-funded as Juilliard is (so I'm guessing he makes quite a bit more than that).

Perhaps the cost of education wouldn't be so painfully high if deans didn't make such an enormous amount of money! After all.... how many internationally-known concert pianists do you think there are who really, actually make $250,000 a year? Believe me when I say that there aren't many!

Yes.... I'm sure his nights are pretty sleepless.....  ::)

Very well said.

And, in terms of drastic increases in overall university level tuition/costs? Duh

Dig the fact that he portrays himself as COOL (and in touch with the public), by not wearing a tie.
