Fast pianissimo passages
on: August 08, 2014, 06:42:21 PM
Well I haven't really come across one, but I am preparing for the inevitable. Can I get some good advice on developing this beastly technique, especially in scales? I have little trouble with them in arpeggios but the problem with scales is they have to sound even and in pp one accented note will be loud enough to bleed my ears!!

The fact you're concerned about this shows you're a long ways there. Playing pp at any speed is essential, critical to evocative performances, and, yes, difficult.

Of course the answer as to how to get there is simple: practice, practice, practice. And record your playing, then listen critically to the result. The broader your dynamic range, the better pianist you'll become.

Best,
Glenn

My method is everything is pretty loud initally, good amount of arm weight on each note, all even of course cause same amount of weight. Playing softer I just use less weight until I get the right volume. They are all even again because it is the same amount of weight on each key.
Hope this helps.
