What gives it its reputation for being hard?

When I look at the score, it doesn't look as hard as other liszt pieces?

I heard it is it's length but that can't be it?  Beethoven wrote sonatas in which he asks for no breaks beetween the movements?

The difficulty is not technical wise

Indeed. The most difficult thing is making the entire piece sound interesting. Lots of recordings of the sonata are very dull.

How long have you played? Which Beethoven sonatas do you play? What is the most difficult piece you've learned thus far? How much time do you put in to work on small details?

Do Liszt's Grosses Konzertsolo before the B mino sonata.  It is a very good warmup and will make learning the sonata easier.

i am trying to learn this sonata, and i must confess it is not technically easy. on certain moments the tempo is very very fast! but i think indeed it is not the hardest piece i know (the transcendental studies, or la campanella, etc.. are more technically difficult, i think)

That's right.  Also, the Grosses Konzertsolo has been considered by many scholars to be a sort of "rough draft" preceding the sonata.

The difficulty of the sonata is manifold. It has technical and musical difficulties that reach the pinnacle of Liszt's compositions. I wouldn't attempt learning this until you are very familiar with standard piano repertoire and have played a significant amount of Liszt and are mature enough to fully interpret the sonata.

Beethoven Sonata's don't generally tend to run for half an hour without a break - he only tends to link 2nd and 3rd movts.
It's length is a major issue for stamina - arguably the hardest technical part is the final presto octaves and this is coming after 25 minutes of already challenging playing!
