Which one?
on: August 15, 2014, 10:25:03 PM
Hi everybody! I wonder, I just played Aufschwung by Schumann and I am now looking for a next piece to learn. The pieces I am choosing between are Pathetique by Beethoven, Ravel's Sonatine and Gershwin's three preludes. Are these pieces suitable at my level you think? Which of these would be the most approachable? I guess they are about the same difficulty as the Schumann?

If you go Gershwin which I recommend ,How's your jazz chops? Might want to sable in jazzy stuff to get used I the idiom. I also recommend Mayerl for hae types in terms of jazzy that classically trained pianists play

Do you recommend Gershwin because it is the easiest?
Well, my jazzing is fair. I am relatively good at improvising at least!

Whichever you're most interested in. Then when it's done, work on another.
Or learn a page from each one at the same time and go from there.

Agree with the comment above, it is much easier to learn something that you think you would enjoy. Personally, I would go for Beethoven's Pathetique (as I cannot stand Gershwin). I learned Beethoven Op. 13 about 3 or 4 years ago and found it fairly approachable - the 2nd and 3rd mvts are peasy, but the 1st requires some dedication and practice.
What is your level of repertoire?

They all seem to be around the 'same level' but they emphasise techniques. For me, I personally prefer Ravel's sonatine, but it is also probably the most difficult out of the three you mentioned. That third movement is an absolute pain to learn, but it is truly rewarding!

Bach - Partita No.2
Scriabin - Etude 8/12
Debussy - L'isle Joyeuse
Liszt - Un Sospiro
Goal:
Prokofiev - Toccata
