Piano repertoire list of the Royal College of Music
on: November 29, 2004, 07:18:05 PM
Hi guys, i just reed the Piano repertoire list of the Royal College of Music (ABRSM, LRSM, FRSM) and they dont take into account great and very difficult pieces such as: "Pictures at an Exhibition", Bartok´s "Allegro Barbaro", Liszt´s "Hungarian Rhapsodies",  Mendelssohn´s  "Caprices", Prokofiev "Suggestion Diabolique" etc

WHY?

The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

It's simply impossible to have a comprehensive repertoire list.

I think the list is 'suggested pieces'
One doesn't need to play ALL those pieces only.

My friend went for her FRSM, she played LIszt sonata, and Schubert/Liszt Lied transcriptions, and Hungarian Rhapsody 2.

Except the HR2, all other are not in the list. And she still pass, so it's not something u need to follow strictly.

I think Presto Agitato was making a criticism of why these "boards" leave musically very interesting pieces that happen to be difficult out of the list.

A simple answer could be that it is beyond the scope of their grading system and so it would not be included.

It's not that it's not included.
It's just impossible to include everything.

And u can still play pieces which are not in the list. So I don't think they 'dismiss' those pieces.

Most exam boards will allow you to play a piece that isn't on the repertoire list, as long as it is at a comparable level (or higher). This page has links to all the different exam board syllabi:
