Audition Repertoire
on: August 18, 2014, 12:36:31 AM
Hey guys! I am planning on auditioning for the year 2015, and would love your response and criticism on my repertoire
My pieces are the following.
Baroque:
Bach: Prelude og Fugue in D major BWV 850
Classical:
Beethoven: Op 13 in Cm “Pathetique” mvt. 1
Beethoven: Op 13 in Cm “Pathetique” mvt. 2
Romantic:
Chopin: Etude in C#m op. 10 no. 4 - Torrent
Modern:
Shostakovich: Preludes in op. 34 - No 1, 2, 5, 6.
What do you think? Thank you so much!

Yeah bro it's pretty solid.
But you better watch out for the pathetique.
I was at some piano symposium lecture thingy and there was a punch of professors from various universities in America, and this is what they said...
...
Watch out for these pieces when you do auditions:
Late Beethoven sonatas
Mozart A minor sonata
Chopin "revolutionary" etude
Chopin nocturnes
Beethoven "moonlight" sonata
Bach p&f in c minor
and last but not least!!!
*drumroll*
...
...
...
BEETHOVEN "PATHETIQUE" SONATA
Now this can work either for or against you. Here's how...
EVERYONE'S PLAYING IT!!! So in order for it to work to your advantage, you gotta play it better than everyone else. BUT... If your performance doesn't stand out from everyone else's, especially since the jury will be tired of hearing it, that can really work against you.
And they're not gonna listen to the second movement either. Chances are you'll just get up to the end of the development.
Now as for the other pieces like the nocturnes and late beethoven sonatas, I'm not saying I agree with them, but at the end of the day you're at the mercy of the jury. What they say goes.

Thank you for your response! I definitely know what you mean. It is very overplayed. But then again. The judges who are listening to me playing, will know the other 31 sonatas just as well. And otherwise, it is too late to study a new sonata now
