Okay there hasn't been anything like this recently but I've been wanting to post this for a while.  But ANYWAYS...  Without further a due...  Here's my post.  

What the heck is with everyone arguing about fucking technique and finger strength how to properly do scales and whether or not czerny or hannon works and all this other stupid bullshit?

Let people do their own thang man jeez!!!

What works for you might work for you but might not work for everyone else, and vice versa.  


And what the heck is with everyone bashing all of these young superstar pianists!!!  Stop saying they have bad technique.  They can obviously play the damn music with no problem so they don't have bad technique!!!  And what is with saying all these new pianists aren't musical?  They don't sound bad!.  It's not like they play forte or piano all the freaking time, they KNOW what they're doing, that's why they're successful!!!  Besides, if you just play the damn notes I don't care what piece it is, it's gonna sound good no matter what!  Get da fuck outta here!!!  You're all just a bunch of haters.  And stop worrying about Yuja Wangs clothing goddamn!!!  Let her do her own thang!

Now I don't mean all of you, just some of you.  Most of you are like normal people.  One of them recently got kicked out of PS.

I'm not interested in arguing, myself. I prefer to bow out when intelligent discussions degenerate into plain old arguments.

I'm all for letting people do their own thing... as long as they've properly studied counterpoint and harmony

IMO the problem is people arguing for the sake of bashing everyone else with their point of view rather then arguing to progress a body of knowledge.  Then there are those few that incessantly shove their "argument" at everyone else without any interest for engaging in discussion.

technique I'd say the OP has a point. The near religious fanaticism of some technique buffs and
old school worshipers can get rather ridiculous. Personally I prefer to focus on the music rather than which pianist from which era plays a piece and whether they have the "right" technique or not. But yeah, some people just love to argue and will go to any lengths to outsmart their opponent, or have the last word (which is always when the other walks away in disgust). I find
it part amusing, part pitiful. Instead of typing mile-long arguments they could be listening to
great music, or even play some themselves ;-)

Having said that, these people seem to be a very small minority in an otherwise very nice and civilized group.

I am certainly crazy, in fact musically I am as mad as a two-bob watch, as everyone here must surely realise after my thirteen years on the forum. I don't argue though, I just enjoy playing exactly as I want to play and let other people get on with doing the same. If someone asks me for help I respond as best I can because I feel music should be an unconditional ecstasy, not a confrontational angst, but I am neither musician nor pianist in any usual sense of those words.

He developed his craft of piano playing technique while he was TEACHING in China. Most of the kids that he taught are under 18, and Alan described them as "world class musicians", just go listen to the recordings.
Human soul is universal, it doesn't matter what age u are, what ethnic background u come from and kids don't need to read from just the bible book alone to tell good from evil and perform a religious piece. Stop hating, they have done nothing wrong by being awesome musicians and you should be happy that there exists human in the world that is able to achieve something so great. Just so you realize, Stuff like "lack emotion" "lack soul" hurt musicians pretty badly as they will stop playing completely because of your stupidity, your rudeness, your lack of support, lack of understanding, lack of appreciation, and ultimately, your ego.

Actually, I think it is kind of wonderful.

I'd much rather read passionate and even irrational debates about technique and the abilities of different pianists than discussing the personalities of the Real Housewives of Moline.

I suspect that the composers we now speak of with such reverence and think of as lofty spirits had vigorous debates about piano techniques and the worthiness of their peers' works.

We are continuing in a grand tradition...though not in a rowdy table at a cafe or a salon.
