Scriabin Etude 8/12 or 42/5
on: August 26, 2014, 06:25:35 PM
Op. 8 no. 12 and op. 42 no. 5 are, unsurprisingly, my favorite Scriabin etudes. Which one should I play first? For reference, my technique is around the level of easier Chopin etudes (10/3, 10/5, 10/12).

Both are great pieces.
I found Op. 8 No. 12 pretty manageable when I played/performed it.
Op. 42, No. 5 is an absolute bear in my opinion. I'd consider it more difficult than all of the Chopin Etudes with the exception of possibly 25/6 and 10/2.

42/5 is really hard. But I think both need to be learned slowly, a la Gilels. Apparently he would practise a good deal of the time at slow tempo. The 8/12 has some difficult stretches but isn't all that fast (at least according to the tempo indications; sometimes it is played faster but you don't need to)
