Recommendations for Jazz and Ragtime pieces?
on: September 11, 2014, 12:20:40 AM
I was wondering if any of you could reccomend any jazz or ragtime pieces that are upbeat and relatively fast to learn? I've played Bumble Boogie by Jack Fina before and I really like Fizz Water by Eubie Blake, but the peice is a bit too complex for my time crunch to learn a new piece. Any suggestions?

One of my favorite songs  in original form however I always liked how Shearing bridges the crossover gap  into spicier territory.  Those harmonic progressions!
Simple enough for the well prepped pianist. Arrangement should be easy to purchase as it is on rcm 9 list as well I believe

i think i actually have this book lying around in one of my bins somewhere, i swear i must have bought it from japan with a large order and never opened, i prolly should. these ghibli pieces are near and dear tome in their original form, but the jazzy treatment lends it self well to most of hisaishi's work.

A nice original variation on an old standard song that anyone would enjoy hearing, even those who have an aversion to the movie.  It is almost wondrous to me with only so many notes, the seeming infinite harmonic palette presented to us.  For awhile I've desired to jazz beyond my classical repertoire, and I see that day approaching in freer climes.  I feel an inspiring love fire is on the horizon.

;D !!
Yes, you could certainly do a lot worse than jazzier-ish offerings, and Shearing, Brubeck, or Guaraldi are all great places to start (seriously I have a new old stock charlie brown peanuts album i bought the other day and the pieces are so charming).

this is another great one to consider, Ihave this score too and it's not bad at all!

Does anyone know of any pieces like these for beginners? Not too simple, but something rhythmic and jazzy/ragtimey sounding? Or where i could get sheet music? Thanks so much! I'll definitely look into some Gauraldi to start.

I started ragtime with Paragon Rag by Joplin in Belwin's Ragtime Piano book # 11414.  Magnetic Rag is in there but it is harder.  Also Joplin's Country Club and Euphonic Sounds.
For easy Jazz fully worked out on a score I like Brimhall,Peterson,Progris 47 Modern & Jazz Piano Pieces published Hansen House D094i. Out of that I play Count on Him, Satin Doll, Take the A Train, Cast Your Fate to the Wind.
I had 6 years of lessons and didn't start these until after I quit lessons then bought a piano 18 years later, so I was not exactly a beginner.
