Bach's French Overture
on: October 03, 2014, 10:33:32 AM
I recently read this book in our conservatory library called Music For The Piano. It's an old book, possibly published in the 50s or 60s and its yellow. Haha. Well enough about the book, I was looking under J.S. Bach listing his keyboard works and I saw that under the partitas, the French Overture was listed as Partita no. 7. Is this true? Would Bach's French Overture be classified as a partita?

The French Ouverture is a work of imposing dimensions and similar in structure to the Partitas. Actually if anything, it is more involved and more imposing than any of them, and musically compares with the best of them. It wasn't included with the Partitas therefore it generally isn't published alongside them, which is a shame since it is a great piece and is very recital worthy (very rarely played in recital though in my experience)
