Busoni Edition of WTK Part. 2
on: October 29, 2014, 05:46:25 AM
Hey all,

So i'm going through and refingering the WTK because i learned them all when i was a poor pianist so it's time to write in all the fingerings the way they should be played.

On imslp I found the edition of Busoni giving some fingerings which really helped in some tricky parts, but it's only in the first part of the WTK that the fingerings are shown, whereas in the second it's just the edited phrasing etc.

I was wondering if any of you had a copy of the second part of the WTK as edited AND fingered by Busoni?

thanks!

There is actually Busoni's fingering suggestions in (both versions) of the one on IMSLP. There's just not much of it. Indeed, whole P/Fs can go without a single suggestion.

There may be other editions you could look at, and there may even be an edition of the Busoni with added fingering by someone else, though I am not aware of it.

If what you really want is genuine Busoni, though, the (very) sparse suggestions made there are all that there is. It seems he mostly thought that the ideas behind his fingering decisions in Book 1 were to be learnt and understood, not just the actual fingering itself, and only indicated fingering where those principles were perhaps insufficient.

I used the Busoni edition to learn a P&F from book II, I don't remember there were any fingerings. There were 'a lot' of other markings which I didn't always agree with.
Now I got the Henle edition with fingering bij A. Schiff, this could be helpful for you.

Your hands aren't the same as Busoni, and so his suggestions may or may not suit you.  I would OP to check different editions, as well as explore other combinations of fingering by myself, which can be fun (or pain!).
