"Legend of 1900" movie
on: November 01, 2014, 12:01:30 AM
just randomly stumbled upon this movie on youtube and was pleasantly surprised how good it was.  it's about this abandoned child who is a prodigy piano player that grows up on a ship and never takes a step on dry land outside the ship.  i don't consider myself a movie connoisseur but i have seen many movies and was surprised that i had never even heard of it considering its subject matter and rating on IMDB.  i really like the piece "the crave" that is played during the piano duel and am gonna go search for the sheets.  anyone else seen this movie?

yeah that last piece doesn't do anything for me and actually ruins the scene for me but the movie itself is good though.  the piece i like is the one that is played twice. love how he gets so pissed that the other guy plays the exact same piece right after him

Ok.  I watched it.

Melodramatic.  Morricone for music, a plus, but adds to that.

Not quite there for the story.

No music for the stage/jazz band?

Why is there a singers suddenly tacked into the music in the credits?

Ok for style.  I think it's missing something, trying to be a little more than it actually turns out to be.  Which is why the whole thing is sitting on youtube and no one's concerned about taking it down for copyright.

And an electric guitar in the end credits music too?

1998... ok.

Usual prodigy BS.  It's convenient to make a character a genius.  Smooths everything out.

But how does he really pick up the style?  The tarantella?  Just asks the guy what it is, they guy gives him the rhythm or a bit of the melody, and he starts playing it?  I'm not buying it.  Sure, lots of musicians come through... and he picks up all these musical styles that way?  I'm not buying it.

Piano playing looked faked.  Trumpet playing looked less fake.

Reading the IMDB notes....

How's that portable record player getting power?

I'd give it a C.  Not great, not bad.  A bit on the drippy side.

you're awfully critical bob.  it's a movie.  if you want to nitpick you could point out hundreds of things in every movie that doesn't make sense in the real world. i agree it wasn't fantastic but for a movie on youtube i thought it was enjoyable and felt like sharing it here since it centers around a piano player and the movie is easily accessible.  by the way, did the way the narrator's eye's kept spazzing out bug you too?  i couldn't stop staring at his eyes.

They used to wind up. Really.  The sound wasn't electrically amplified.

I even notice the eye thing at all.  I saw that in IMDB but... I'm not going back.

Kind of a 'meh' movie.  I wasn't impressed.  Wouldn't watch it twice.  Might listen to the music again.

I was thinking the jazz band could memorize all their stuff.  If they kept playing the same pieces night after night... But I thought those groups had hundreds of pieces.   This would have been 1920-ish though.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
