Hello!
I'd like some feedback on putting together a program for DMA auditions.

What do you think of the following:
Bach French overture
Beethoven AM sonata op. 101 or appassionata (too overplayed?)
Chopin Ballade 4 or Bb minor sonata?
Ravel Gaspard del la nuit
Liszt feux follets étude

All but the chopin ballade I've studied at least partially...
I know this is a long program but I think I can handle it and want my audition to be as impressive as possible....

Thank you so much for your feedback!

For the Beethoven Sonata, I would definitely do Op. 101. The Appassionata is not good for auditions.

For the Chopin, I personally prefer the 4th Ballade, but I'm not sure how it compares to the Bb minor sonata as far as auditions go. The only problem is that Ballades take a while to master, especially since judges can get very picky with them.

Consider putting music earlier than J.S. Bach on the program, or a lesser known Bach contemporary.  It would also be good to include some late 20th/21st century work.  Including a nationalistic composer from the country you are auditioning would be helpful.

At the DMA level, you should be able to defend your interpretations verbally with conviction when questioned.  It doesn't matter whether the jury is in agreement with you or not, the point is you need to present a solid argument of why you made the choices you did, and how your performance satisfied the requirements of your own interpretation.  IMO, this shows the strength and depth of your musical insight, as well as the ability to engage in academic debate.

Impress with your ability to execute a well chosen program, not with your ability to choose an impressive looking program.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
