Composition
on: November 06, 2014, 12:40:11 PM
This is my new composition, and I would like to have some feedback about it.
This is my first post here and I haven't really composed much, so would like to get another word of should I continue composing or just use my resources in an other way.

Thanks!

I would recommend you to cease the practice of composing using the computer, and make a concerted effort to return to the old ways of paper and ink.

Experienced composers can use notation software if they choose to do so, but it is not an effective method of creating good music for people who lack extensive experience.

In my opinion, you should continue composing AND use your resources in another way. Throughout history, there have been some truly exceptional composers who held down various day jobs, attended university programs in subjects unrelated to music, raised families, etc.

One cannot expect instant success in the field of musical composition. One has to be a gardener, who grows real MAGIC instead of ordinary fruits in his orchard! Fruit trees take years to come to maturity, as do the multitude of skills that a good composer has up his sleeve. Do not be impatient if your first piece isn't a big hit!

:) Return to the ways of old and study with due diligence, and you will get what you deserve!

In fact this was my first composition that i composed completely only with computer. I have some pieces composed only with help of paper and piano. Most of the compositions are made working with piano and computer. I use the sheet music program to compose because it's faster and because my piano playing technique is not advanced enough to let my creativity really blossom in the old fashion paper-pencil-way.  :)

Just because a computer allows you to fill a page with black dots faster than your hand could with a pencil on paper doesn't make the fire of your imagination burn with any more intensity.  :)

You don't need to play like Horowitz to be able to compose beautiful, original music. I would be more interested to hear you play your own music with your own hands than to hear a midi playback of something you did on Finale or Sibelius!

Do you really believe those programs are helping your creativity to blossom?

...I agree--I hate midi playback too.  I will confess though-- when I first learned finale (the glitchfest that it was back then)  I enjoyed composing pages of black dots that had no regard for human hands...or musicality.

I must say--it did cause my creativity to blossom in a round about way...  when I got over myself...and realized that all those notes, played in perfect rhythm at incredible speed did not equal great music...   who am I kidding... it wasn't even music...  I finally began to play with purpose and musicality... I began to understand the big picture at last.

still...cut him some slack...  it's fun while it lasts :)  and knowing that software is a great skill to have...

there is something really personal though about notating your own piece of music in your own hand.  Old fashioned notation was still a requirement in my day...and it was graded on neatness as well as content.

A lot of stuff is fun while it lasts. Kindergarten was an absolute blast for a few years! Playing all day, no homework, no exams....

Maybe society could cut me some slack and I could go back there instead of having to earn a living?

I'm only 25!

 ;)

Sorry, there isn't much slack to go around in the world of music. Maybe someone else has a bit they can cut him.
