1975 Yamaha and 7-year old K&C, which to choose?
on: December 03, 2004, 07:04:29 AM
Hi,
I am just a beginner and going to buy a piano to practise. I saw the following two used piano for sale:
1. Yamaha/Everett console piano with music bench. Well-maintained (tuned and regulated). 1975 model, $1,350
2. Kohler & Cambell Upright in outstanding condition. Played only a few times since purchase. 7-year old, $1,200
I heard that Yamaha has a better quality but this one is 30-year old, is it still worth a look?
I am going to take a look of them. Would you please give me some advise on how to check? Do I need to hit every key to hear the sound?
Thanks
Shaozi

If you know how to play the piano, play them and see either is worth your time to pursue further. If you don't know how to play, the most basic is to press all 88 keys and all three pedals to make sure they work. If you like either one, spend a little money to hire an experienced piano tuner/technician not related to the seller to inspect the piano for you, just like you'd get an independent mechanic to check out a used car for you before you buy.
With used piano, it usually comes down to the condition of the piano, and that's what you hire the tuner/technician to help you determine. Price also varies greatly depending on condition.
Also, there's a book written by Larry Fine called "The Piano Book" that might have useful tips on buying used pianos that can help you. You might even find the book in your local library if you don't want to buy a copy. The book also has tons of information on pianos.
Good luck.
