Which Rachmaninoff Concerto should I play?
on: November 07, 2014, 04:10:16 AM
I'm going to be using a Rachmaninoff piano concerto for competition next year, and I will be performing it with my school's orchestra, however I'm torn between which one I should do. Your thoughts?

Rachmaninoff Nr 1
1) Because of the opening!
2) Its not overplayed as nr 2 and 3
3) Its fresh!

Why you won't play all movements of chosen concerto? Second concerto is most easy (for me) Anyway you forgot his 4th concerto.
Chopin etudes op.10 No 1,3,12 op.25 No 12
Schumann and Grieg piano concertos A minor
Beethoven sonatas No.17, No.14
Rachmaninoff prelude B minor
and more...

I don't have time to learn a whole concerto right now because I am also preparing an audition program for colleges/conservatories. I do plan to learn the rest of whichever one I choose though so I can actually perform the whole work. Also, I looveee the 4th concerto but it's too obscure for my purposes right now.

Thanks for your input! This is the one I've decided on playing especially since I've found that the technique in the first concerto fits my hands well.
