Competition piece suggestsions
on: November 08, 2014, 12:04:41 AM
Hi everyone,

I would be interested to get competition piece suggests from you all:

I am looking for repertory that is late Romantic or Contemporary/20th Century.
It should (preferably) be 5 minutes or less in length; however, I'm not opposed to cutting a piece if it is absolutely convincing.
Preferably, the piece would be less known/not overplayed, though not so obscure that it would estrange the judges.
The level of the piece hopefully is fairly advanced technically though should still have places where expression could shine through.

To give you an idea of my techncial level - I've played Les Adieux (Beethoven) and the Chopin Ballade op 23 recently as well as a number of preludes/fugues.

Hopefully that should narrow the possible suggestions. I really appreciate your help!

Thank you for the suggestions. However, I am looking for pieces a bit more difficult/technical than these. Any suggestions?

The Gargoyles are very difficult pieces (especially #1 and 4), though they are normally played in its entirety, as they only take 10 minutes in total.

Have you thought of Dohnanyi's Rhapsody no 3.  It has a really "big-tune" and sounds a heck of a lot harder than it is to play.

Debussy Feux d'artifice

Grainger In Dahomey

Both of them are about 4 mintues, and both are on fellowship diploma syllabus of two UK exam boards.  Coincidentally, the above youtube selections are all played by Hamelin, which may not be the best - but still fairly excellent IMO.

Try Granados - Maiden and the Nightingale.
Beautiful, showy, and certainly difficult enough.
