Practice Tips?
on: November 25, 2014, 02:28:00 AM
So, I've been playing piano now for
eight years
, but I've recently taken a short break due to the craziness of my schedule. I'm currently a high school sophomore playing three varsity sports and taking four AP classes. It's insane (but I have to get into college somehow). For my sanity I've taken about a twelve week break from playing piano, but now I really want to get back into it. In the past I've found that it's helped me to set goals for myself, for example, pieces I want to play, and so right now my goals are to play Jarrod Radnich's pieces, mostly the Game of Thrones medley, and Jon Schmidt's "All of Me." Before I took a break, I was able to play Scott Joplin's ragtime pieces (with some difficulty, but that was mostly because I have small hands). My question is: what pieces/warmups would you recommend for somebody trying to regain and improve their dexterity and who wants to play these particularly fast pieces?

Learn to use your body. If you can control that, you can control the piano. If, on the other hand, you learn to play pieces, you will struggle for many years, possibly your entire life and not accomplish much.
