Best young concert pianists?
on: November 30, 2014, 06:00:48 AM
What are your opinions of the younger pianists (<30 years of age) making the rounds in major venues today? Off the top of my head, I can think of Yuja Wang, Daniil Trifonov, Alice Sara Ott, Benjamin Grosvenor, Jan Lisiecki, etc.

To what extent does clever marketing and the "prodigy" hype influence their current success? Does too much concertizing and press promotions stunt their growth as artists? What will it take to become for them to become mature, fully-fledged artist who can stand among the greats?

No more than for great pianists of the past.

I would have to disagree with the good j_menz here, I'm afraid!

About the marketing or the too much concertising?

Consider Mozart or Liszt for either, then get back to me.

Without question, there has always been a market for young talent, j_menz.

However, Mozart and Liszt didn't have to resort to things like 'twerking' in order to impress their audience.

Music simply wasn't the packaged, commercial commodity that it is today.

Without question, we live in a very different world now! Whether these changes have had a positive or negative impact on either the role of piano-playing in artistic culture or the role of artistic culture in piano playing is up to the individual to decide!  :)
