choosing a piece for advanced daughter to be judged on
on: December 02, 2014, 01:35:09 AM
I am not a musician but I have a young daughter who plays piano and viola. She is going to be judged on a piano and viola piece in a few months and we're trying to pick her piano piece. Her viola teacher is great about choosing pieces she likes but her piano teacher likes her to choose. My daughter gets overwhelmed by choices so I usually have to narrow it down to a few for her. Recently she's done Beethoven's Pathetic, some Chopin preludes and nocturns and did Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu for her most recent judging where she got the highest rating possible. She prefers difficult songs and performs them very well. Most of the songs I've been finding that she likes are too long, we want to keep it to around 6 minutes. Any suggestions? The better she gets the harder it is for me to keep up with helping her and she's just a bit too young to be independent.

Beethoven's Pathetic sonata? I'm assuming you meant Pathetique.
If you want more Beethoven, she could do the 3rd movement of the Moonlight. If she's done FI and the entire pathetique, she's likely more than capable of playing it.
Read through some Schubert Impromptus, or the other Chopin Impromptus if she wants them.
Also, a little longer (and much more difficult), the Chopin Barcarolle may interest her.
