Can it be possible to handle all
on: December 09, 2014, 09:10:02 PM
My piano teacher wants me to only focused in the pieces she wants me to play during the rest of the holidays:
Invention 7 Bach complete
Waltz op 64 no 2 Chopin first 2 pages
Sonatina op 63 no 3 Clementi pages 1 and 3 (a preparation for a sonata which the teacher hasn't tell me yet)
Prelude X Debussy not complete
All of them with separated hands.
However, I have another teacher with whom I have to work the next ones.
Invention 7 Bach
Valse Brillante op 18 Chopin (for recital on May)
Sonata op 49 no 1 Beethoven
Arabesque 1 Debussy
Valse Poetico Felipe Villanueva (for recital on May)
Not sure if I can handle both, but I can think that one advantage is that some of them I have played them for more than a year. The ones which are "new" for me are:
Waltz op 64 no 2 Chopin first 2 pages
Sonatina op 63 no 3 Clementi pages 1 and 3
Prelude X Debussy not complete
Valse Brillante op 18 Chopin
Sonata op 49 no 1 Beethoven
Do you think it is possible to play them and prepare them decently until April?
I know that if one wants it, it can be possible, but also I want to be realistic.

Hi faa2010,
Possible? Maybe.
Decently? Maybe.
I know. Lots of help, right?
Maybe I can help you to help yourself though, which would probably be the most accurate answer anyway. Who knows you better than you, right? What your capable of. What your willing to do and how hard your willing to work? You, only you and nobody but you. Isn't that a song?
Okay, so 5 new pieces in approximately 5 months, right? Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr
Dec is already a 3rd over. How much time will you have over the holidays? Also, the beginning of April or the end?
If Dec is mostly a wash and you need to be prepared April 1 then this is only 3 whole months. Jan, Feb, Mar
So, time allotted is somewhere between 3-5 months, is that right?
How many additional pieces still need work, how much and then maintenance of them?
How fast have you learned pieces of similar difficulty in the past?
The Bach invention no. 7 and the Beethoven are listed as grade 6 here on pianostreet.
Chopin op 64 no 2 is a 7 and Grande valse brillante in E-flat major (Chopin) is an 8?
How long did it take for similar pieces?
Also, are these pieces way below your ability? If so, then one might conclude you could learn them in a relatively short time.
On the other hand, are they a stretch for you? How much? That Op. 18 could be a question mark? I don't know. Just sayin'
Is there an April recital? Or only the May recital? When in May? May 1st or May 31st? That could mean an extra month or couple of weeks maybe? Again, I don't know any of these things.
Are there any other pressing commitments on your time such as work, school or family?
I hope this has been helpful, Joe.
