How to play this part of the song with scales?
on: December 14, 2014, 09:57:55 AM
I am practicing a two steps from hell song called heart of courage(sorry if you were expecting something classical). Here is the tutorial link.

=1m25s

I want to know the fingering for right hand part at around 1:29 where there is a scale kind of thing(i dont know what they call it).

The scale is something like this(if it is not clear in the above video).

Bb,Db,Ab,Bb,Bb,(higher octave)Db,Ab,Bb,Bb,(higher octave)Db,Ab,Bb

I am a total beginner by the way.

And also how to play such things at high speeds? i mean what kind of practice should i do? I learnt a bit of the music theory online and i am learning it everyday.

Thanks. :D

Bb,Db,Ab,Bb,Bb,(higher octave)Db,Ab,Bb,Bb,(higher octave)Db,Ab,Bb

Bb is thumb, Db Ab are whatever is most natural. Bb is 5 (pinkie), next Bb is switch to thumb. rinse and repeat.

Reasonably advanced technique, and the idea that it's obvious is one of the reasons synaesthesia sucks big time.

^^ Thanks for your reply. I have the sheet, but to post this question i used that youtube video. Either way i tried the same fingering as you said, but i am unable to play that faster. i can maybe play it at 60-70% of the real speed. Despite practicing it, i am unable to move forward, so i thought my fingering was wrong or something, so i posted it here. Either way i will practice more and see if that helps. Thanks again. :D

As I say, it's reasonably advanced technique.

Chopin Etude 25/12 is devoted to it if you really want to master it. Classical, not perhaps what you are after, but it is the best workout on that particular technique around.

Methinks that 25/12 is a bit far off in terms of technique.

Practice it as solid chords playing in time with the rest of the material.  Form your hand to the chord, and just shift the hand up to the next octave and play the next chord without changing the shape of the chord in your fingers.  The fastest way to play arpeggios is to play them as solid chords.  In order to get the proper arpeggio effect, you "slow down" the solid chord in a controlled manner so the notes are played in time and in order.  Playing fast is the easy part, it is controlling the deployment of fingers will take time to develop.

I'd use 1-2-4-5 as the fingering, but use whatever is comfortable.

Don't beat yourself up too much about this, as said above it is a technique one learns when one gets more advanced.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
