Hoffmeister piano sonatas
on: December 22, 2014, 02:45:56 PM
Ok, so we all know (or I hope so!  :P ), about his groovy piano concerto. And the instrumentalists get their kicks w/ the much more often performed non solo piano works.

But anyone out there have some expereince and insight on the sonatas? I have been looking and listening and his music and more lately (his sonata in A on imslp for ex), and the more I go into his music, the  more I wonder why the solo works are almost unheard of.

I mean, it is understandable how in a sea of Romantic composers, many fall to obscurity, but we do not exactly have nearly a long a list of prolific classical period composers, let along, of the talent exhibited by Hoffmeister.

Is there some stigma against him I'm unaware of? Have you performed any of the sonatas and have favorite in particular?  Which one? Why?

Just looking to stir some lively interesting chatter on this and related.

Cheers.

also, anyone have a lead on where / how to get the scores to some of (or all)  other sonatas and variations?  I can only look at the ones on IMSLP.  I have also accompanied on an instrumental concerto but am keenly interested in solo piano music. Thanks.

It says Hoffmeister "issued works by some of the most distinguished of his contemporaries" which includes Vanhal.  A forgotten rose of his time, Vanhal is most worthy of ears, as he is included among his own famous contemporaries.  As I have become acquainted with Vanhal, he has evinced an originality and derring-do that I have to say I've never encountered in my musical browsings.  Lovers of the classical era will delight in his idiom, which can dramatically satisfy in his accents on the timpani. Against the backdrop of classical reserve, Vanhal's originality and soul-indulgence most interestingly redress his time without straying.

I didn't have anything on your Hoffmeister query, but it was an opportunity to bring awareness of Vanhal.  Do shower me in your grace. 8)

Bisel have done the first two Sonatas. They're a little pricey, but I have found their editions excellent (new typeset and edited). Perhaps a little love for the Hoff will encourage them to do more.

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
