BIG solo work to finish off recital
on: January 10, 2015, 10:15:08 AM
So I've got my first solo recital in June, and so far the first half of the concert goes like:

Bach - Partita no. 2
Beethoven - Sonata Op. 31 no. 3

Then after the interval, I really want to do a big big work lasting about 25+ minutes. Ideally perhaps a collection/set of short pieces rather than another sonata, for example. I've thought about Rachmaninoff's Six moments musicaux, but I wanted to hear about other people's ideas :)

Don't worry about difficulty, I've got a lot of time, and I'll make doubly sure if something is a bit beyond me at the moment!

If a piano sonata, what about the d'Indy, Szymanowski's Second, the Dukas or the Godowsky?

If not, how about Godowsky's Passacaglia on the opening theme of Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony...

Whilst i do not warm to many of his works, i find the Reger Telemann variations to be simply divine.

I would personally never go near it and i doubt if many pianists would play it in concert.

I would not choose another Sonata or a piece too 'enormous' compared to the preceding.
For me, a most fitting choice could be a series of short character pieces: Schumann's Carnaval, Davidsbundlertanze (easier but a masterwork, nonetheless) or... Lecuona's Andalucia :D
Currently on:
Bach - WTK Book 1 n. 5-6
Beethoven - Sonate Pathétique
Rachmaninov - Polichinelle op. 3
Studies from Clementi and Moscheles
Telemann - Fantasias 1-2 in D
Haydn - b minor Sonata

Full set or selection from:

Chopin : Ballades/ scherzos/ etudes. preludes
Liszt : Transcriptions/ concert etudes/ transcendental etudes
Brahms : Two to three full sets of Op 116 - Op 119
Rachmaninoff : Preludes/ etudes tableau
Mussorgsky : Pictures at an exhibition
Prokofiev : 10 Pieces from Romeo & Juliet

Or the second half will be all transcriptions but by different composers?

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
