summer programs
on: January 11, 2015, 05:39:52 AM
Does anyone know of some good piano summer programs for teens? It could also be a general music program that has a piano focus of course. A 1 or 2 week program would be ideal, but I'd be fine with 3 weeks too. I live in New York, so preferably something in the tri-state area. I'm looking for a program that is respected and challenging, but not too terribly competitive to get in to.

Yeah, Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, UK. But, that is not in the tri-state area ...
I went there this past summer and there were people from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Russia, USA&Canada ... well, and me, from Scandinavia. Actually I was the only one from Scandinavia, which puzzled me a lot.
But the school - I was there for one week, some doubled and stayed for two - was excellent and a wonderful experience. First, the school looks in some parts like Hogwart's ...
... and in other parts it is very modern and comfortable. Second, you could be as young or as old as you liked, they had pastoral care for students under age. Third, the teachers were excellent, and Fourth, it did not matter on what level you were. It was not even that expensive (but the flight will cost, of course).
I just have to admit that I did not even have to time of considering leaving the school area during this whole week, because I was fully occupied from early morning to late night with activities - if nothing else, then my own practice. Sometimes I was totally exhausted.
The application forms open tomorrow, I think, and I will be there to sign up. My flight is already booked.

Interlochen and Blue Lake are the two big ones I've heard of.

I'm not sure if they both include piano though.

Thanks for the responses! Unfortunately all those places are rather far away from New York, and my parents aren't going to pay for anything that would involve me flying. The only thing I've found so far that's somewhat close to home is the Summer Piano Institute at Ithaca College, but I have no idea how it is. Does anyone know anything about it? Any other ideas?

If their summer programs are anything like their undergraduate programs, then they would be far too competitive for the likes of me!

There's the summit music festival at the end of july to the beginning of august. The piano faculty is really impressive.
