Piano transcriptions of Saint-Saens orchestral works
on: January 14, 2015, 01:39:50 PM
Hi guys
Few weeks ago I was amazed by for me previous not so well known composer Camille Saint-Saens
I immediately started to search for transcriptions of his works like Danse Macabre or Danse Bachanalle from Samson and Dalila, Aquarium from Carnival of animals etc.
So my question is do you know some good piano arrangments of those i mentioned and other saint-saens pieces you like?
I found a Liszt variant od Danse macabre(
) but (and pls do not burn me at stake for this) i consider it too boring for the listener od 21.st century. For me it is like 5 minutes of great material and 5 minutes of plain virtuosity that amaze you as a pianist but is boring for non-pianist listener.
I am composition student and passionate piano player (but i am more jazz and modern music oriented) and my target audience is not the classical audience so i am looking for more 21st. century friendly version.
I think the problem with most of those transcriptions is that they respect the original piece too much, but what is long enough for orchestra that is able to produce rich variety of timbres and tone qualities, instrumentations etc, is terrible lenghty for solo piano that becomes rather annoying.
I dont want to offend pianist nor classical music if it looks so, i love it
But as i said since i will probably not make living playing classical piano and play more for enjoyment and entertainment of friends etc i would like to know if you know such transcription.
I am not a piano beginner, i know there are lot of transcriptions created for amateurs but that is not what i am looking for
If i dont find any i will probably took the liszt one (since i realy love how he arranged the most important parts of the original) and shorten it by half by removing passages i think are not necessary for the form.

Saens was also a masterful transcriber himself, FYI, his Bach works are so rarely heard but really quite wonderful
