My recording of 'Blue Air' by Madeleine Dring
on: January 29, 2015, 08:40:47 AM
Hi,

Blue Air is a contemporary/'jazzy' piece with beautiful melodic lines composed by Madeleine Dring (1923-1977) from the Color Suite.

Have a listen! Would love some feedback.

It's a nice piece of music.

The mood has far greater sway than the tempo you keep, which is too strict for the moods.  Certain moods require you to push forward and then pull back when the gentler mood returns.

The heavy bass octaves is too loud which overpowers the melody.  It's very percussive which is annoying to listen to.

The opening motive: what's the meaning?  It's a bit too slow to hear a coherent idea.

This is good ! I had not heard from Madeleine Dring before. As a composer she had an impeccable
pedigree, her style is nice and light and jazzy. You play it very well, I think this is not at all easy.
But you're making quite heavy weather of it. You need to lighten up, play it a bit livelier, lighter,
more casual and swinging. Easier said than done, I know ! But the piece is worth it, and I think
you can do it.
Thanks for posting this, it is a worthwhile discovery.

Dear @faulty_damper and @cbreemer,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Sorry for the delayed response but somehow I never received a notification for these responses. Like you both pointed out - it is a nice composition and I too really like it. The jazzy harmonies add nice texture.
Seems like both of you feel that it should be a little lighter and needs more swing. I will give this another attempt. I usually perform it lighter and play with the tempo live. It's not the easiest piece :) I'll record it again and send it through to you guys!

thanks for listening and for the feedback!

Much appreciated.
