Audiation - integrated curriculum for piano
on: February 01, 2015, 08:26:15 PM
I never learned Kodaly or any of the solfege approaches for rhythm and pitch when I was younger, but have recently been reading Edward Gordon's work on Music Learning theory and audiation, and wondering how folks hear integrate singing/rhythm into piano classes?

I have recently been asked to teach some four year olds and one 3 year old. They have been doing remarkably well, but I want to incorporate more activities away from the piano. Using takadimi for rhythmic practice; taking the rhythm of the song they will be playing and doing free movement to rote rhythmic patterns, as well as the pitches of the song. Then kids songs, such as bingo which is nice an easy to practice audiation.

Looking for suggestions or links to material which might be more structured with a specific focus on preparation for young learners starting out on piano.

Gordon's own materials look great and I might just order some of those, but they may also be over kill as I know they are intended for training classroom teachers.

Music together is based on Gordon's theory, they have great arrangements of songs using multiple modes and world music giving a nice broad background: https://www.musictogether.com/store/cds-and-downloads

This is Gordons Kindergarten song book with Cd, maybe a bit more dry than the music together Cd's:

Very interested if any teacher's here use this type of material to compliment lessons. Thanks!
