Suggested repertoire for a 10-minute performance
on: February 09, 2015, 04:42:41 PM
Hi everyone!

I'm currently in the UK, and am doing piano performance in my university.

I was recently given the opportunity to have a short 10-minute segment in a recital for music students in 3 months' time, and would like to know what pieces I could consider for this.

I obtained my licentiate diploma for piano performance 4 years ago, and am thinking of learning a few short pieces - but I can't think of any that are shorter than 3 minutes for now. Ideally I'd like to play two or three short pieces - difficulty level around the licentiate standard.

What would you all recommend?

a tad under 10 but if you let it breathe in spots you should be able to gain about 30-45 seconds easily without affecting the overall piece

Chopin: Etude 10/3, 10/11, 10/6
           Mazurka 17/4, 33/4
           Preludes- E minor, E major, C major, C minor, A major, B minor, G minor, D flat major
But you'd have to select from those - and the D flat major Prélude is rather longer than any of the others that you mention.

There are so many possibilities, but how about
Liszt:       Feux-Follets (no. 5 from 12 Transcendental Studies, S139)
Scriabin:   Guirlandes (no. 1 of Deux Danses Op. 73)
Sorabji:    Transcendental Study No. 1 (from 100 Transcendental Studies)

Good luck!

Best,

You couldn't think of a Liadov piece under ten minutes?  :o

An excellent choice of composer - have a look at his Preludes, or his Musical Snuff Box ( the latter being an excellent way to add considerable contrast to a short program)

My advice is to think of 2 short pieces that YOU like.  Don't choose pieces you think somebody else would like.  Be yourself, have confidence in your choice of the music you love. And play with the passion that you obviously have.

Thanks guys, the bagatelle sounds lovely.

My teacher said that instead of 10 minutes, I now have 20 minutes to work with.

Gulp. I don't know if that's a good thing - I have the tempest sonata, chopin's 20th c minor nocturne and some gershwin preludes to fall back on.. I really wanted to learn the Rach G minor Prelude and am just about sightreading it through, but not to speed.

Is there a way you guys could help me with hand tension for the rach g minor prelude op 23/5?

20 minutes?  Well, following in the footsteps of the other suggesters, why don't you just play the entire Hammerklavier in 20 minutes?  Seems insignificantly less reasonable.
